The term sampler comes from the Latin exemplum meaning an example to be followed. This very early sampler was created in 1825 by 8-year-old Marion Platel. Marion embroidered the letters of the alphabet followed by a poem:
See how the lilies flourish white & fair
See how the ravens fed from heaven are
Then never distrust thy God for cloth and bread
While lilies flourish and Ravens fed.
This sampler is also beautifully embroidered with flowers and birds.
It is remarkable work for an 8-year-old.
This sampler was donated by Joselyn and Graeme Beardmore in 2005.
