Redland Museum

Community Owned since 1972

Structure

Redland Museum is a membership organisation, incorporated under the Incorporation Act and registered as a deductible gift recipient. The members of Redland Museum include volunteer and museum members, business members, life members and honorary members. A general meeting of members is held once a month and all are welcome to attend and enjoy a social morning tea afterwards. (First Tuesday of the month at 8am).

Redland Museum is managed by a Management Committee that consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and no less than two or more than four other members. Redland Shire Council nominates an elected member and an officer of the Council to attend the meetings as observers and consultants.

Redland Museum employs a full-time operations manager, part-time Administrative Assistants on job share basis, and an Exhibitions Officer.

The Management Committee meets once a month or as required. (Second Thursday of the month at 12.30pm).

Benefits

Becoming a member of the Redland Museum will allow you to join a group of people dedicated to caring and maintaining the history and culture of the Redlands. You will be entitled to visit the Museum at no cost during opening hours and the possibility of a welcoming cup of tea or coffee is very real. Every year the Museum hosts a Christmas Party that is attended by members, Redland Shire Councillors, Redland Shire Council officers, museum industry members, and local community and business leaders. The Museum holds regular openings in the Temporary Exhibition Space and all members are invited to attend. Most importantly you will know that your membership assists the Museum in carrying out its aims and objectives.

Volunteering

While there is no requirement for members to become volunteers, all members interested in doing so are very welcome. Volunteers play a major part in many tasks undertaken by the museum. These can include guiding school groups around the Museum, cataloguing objects, contributing to the fundraising craft stalls, Museum reception on weekends and public holidays, and carrying out conservation work on the objects.

In some cases we have teams of volunteers working on particular projects and this is considered beneficial as volunteers enjoy the social aspect of volunteering as well as the satisfaction of a job well done.

Volunteers can choose when they would like to work and how many hours or days a week.

Current Projects

Cataloguing

One of the largest projects underway, and the one involving the most volunteers, is the cataloguing of every object in the collection. The first phase of this project involves checking all background information, doing any extra research as necessary and capturing all the details of the object. The second phase is inputting the data into the museums computerised database, including images as available. The Redland Museum has over 8000 objects in its collection and it is our intention that it be one of the best documented social history collections in the state.

Textile Collection

The Dorothy Templeton BEM Textile Room was recently officially opened and as such heralded the start of another major project. As a sub-section of the cataloguing project, all textiles and costumes will be catalogued, photographed and rehoused in the textile room. The room will also serve as a research library and all the books are being catalogued and readied for use by members and bona fide researchers.
